Pre-Operative Physiotherapy

Pre-op physiotherapy (also known as “prehabilitation”) is designed to prepare your body for surgery, minimise complications, and accelerate recovery.

By entering your operation stronger, more mobile, and better informed, you improve your chances of a smoother post-surgical outcome.

Key benefits of pre-op physiotherapy include:

  • Building strength and flexibility: Targeted exercises help improve muscle control, joint mobility, and cardiovascular fitness

  • Improving circulation: Promotes better healing and reduces the risk of post-surgical complications like blood clots

  • Optimising posture and movement patterns: Correcting any pre-existing imbalances to make recovery easier

  • Pain and swelling management: Learning strategies and exercises to reduce inflammation and discomfort

  • Education and preparation: Your physiotherapist will walk you through what to expect during and after the surgery, including safe movements and exercises you can start immediately post-op

For example, someone undergoing a knee replacement may work on strengthening their quadriceps and improving range of motion beforehand. Similarly, shoulder surgery patients benefit from pre-op exercises to maintain scapular mobility and reduce stiffness.

Post-Operative Physiotherapy

After surgery, post-op physiotherapy is essential to restore function, reduce pain, and prevent complications such as stiffness, muscle wasting, or scar tissue build-up. Your physiotherapist will develop a structured, progressive program tailored to your specific procedure, ensuring you regain strength, flexibility, and confidence.

Goals of post-op physiotherapy include:

  • Managing pain and swelling with manual therapy, modalities, and early exercises.

  • Restoring range of motion through gentle stretching, joint mobilisations, and targeted movement exercises.

  • Strengthening weakened muscles with a progressive strengthening plan.

  • Improving balance and coordination for safe movement and return to daily activities.

  • Scar tissue management to maintain optimal tissue mobility.

  • Gradual return to sport or work activities through a personalised functional training program.

Individualised Rehabilitation Plans

No two surgeries — or patients — are the same. Your pre- and post-op rehabilitation is tailored to your procedure, your surgeon’s protocols, your functional capacity, and your personal goals. Whether your goal is to walk without pain, return to high-level sports, or simply regain independence, we’ll design a plan that works for you.
