Pain at the front of the hip can make everyday movements surprisingly difficult. Whether you notice discomfort when walking, squatting, sitting for long periods or playing sport, anterior hip impingement may be contributing to your symptoms.
Anterior hip impingement, also known as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), occurs when the bones of the hip joint come into contact earlier than they should during movement. Over time, this can irritate the surrounding cartilage, labrum and soft tissues, resulting in hip pain and reduced mobility.
At Belconnen Physiotherapy Clinic, we regularly assess people experiencing hip pain from sport, work and everyday activities. A thorough assessment helps identify the factors contributing to your symptoms so an appropriate management plan can be developed.
Anterior hip impingement is a condition where the ball and socket of the hip joint do not move together as smoothly as they should. This may occur because of subtle differences in the shape of the hip joint or changes in the way the hip moves.
When the hip bends deeply or rotates, the bones may pinch the soft tissues at the front of the joint. Repeated irritation can lead to ongoing anterior hip pain, stiffness and difficulty with movement.
Although structural changes may contribute to hip impingement, not everyone with these changes experiences pain. This is why a comprehensive assessment by a hip physiotherapist is important.
Common symptoms include:
·Pain in the front of the hip or groin
·Pain during or after sport
·Discomfort when squatting or lunging
·Pain after prolonged sitting
·Stiffness when getting up from a chair
·Clicking or catching sensations in the hip
·Reduced hip flexibility
·Difficulty running, kicking or changing direction
Symptoms may develop gradually or begin after a hip injury.
Several factors may contribute to anterior hip impingement, including:
Some people naturally have slight variations in the shape of the hip joint that increase the likelihood of impingement during certain movements.
Sports involving repeated hip flexion and rotation, such as football, hockey, martial arts, dancing and CrossFit, may increase stress on the hip.
Reduced strength or flexibility around the hips, pelvis and trunk can alter movement patterns and place additional stress on the hip joint.
Previous injuries may change the way the hip functions, contributing to ongoing symptoms if movement patterns are not fully restored.
Hip physiotherapy aims to identify the factors contributing to your symptoms and improve how your hip functions.
Following a detailed assessment, your physiotherapist may recommend:
·Education about your condition
·Activity modification where appropriate
·Exercises to improve hip strength
·Mobility exercises to improve movement
·Progressive return-to-sport planning
·Advice on managing training loads
·Techniques to improve movement patterns
Treatment is tailored to your individual goals, whether that involves returning to sport, reducing discomfort during work or improving everyday mobility.
Consider booking an appointment if:
·Hip pain has lasted more than one to two weeks.
·Pain is affecting work, sport or daily activities.
·Your hip feels stiff or catches during movement.
·You are avoiding exercise because of discomfort.
·Symptoms continue to return despite rest.
Early assessment may help identify contributing factors before symptoms become more persistent.
Some people notice improvement by modifying activities that aggravate symptoms. However, if pain continues or regularly returns, assessment by a hip physiotherapist can help determine the likely cause and guide appropriate management.
Walking is often well tolerated, although this varies between individuals. If walking increases your hip pain, it is worth having your symptoms assessed.
In many cases, remaining active is beneficial, although certain movements or training loads may need temporary modification. A physiotherapist can help you identify suitable exercises while your symptoms are managed.
Not everyone requires imaging. A physiotherapist can assess your symptoms and determine whether further investigation or referral to another healthcare practitioner may be appropriate.
Recovery varies depending on factors such as symptom duration, activity levels, the underlying cause and individual circumstances. Your physiotherapist can discuss expected timeframes after completing an assessment.
