ChatGPT Says I Have a Rotator Cuff Injury. Do I Still Need a Physio?

October 20, 2026•3 min read

Searching symptoms online has become second nature, and AI tools like ChatGPT can give you quick, readable information about shoulder pain. If you've typed in your symptoms and landed on “rotator cuff injury”, you're in good company. But is that enough to start a rehab program on your own? Here's why an in-person assessment still matters.

What AI can (and can't) do for shoulder pain

AI tools are useful for general education. They can explain how the shoulder works, describe common conditions and help you prepare questions. What they can't do is examine you. They can't watch how your shoulder blade moves, feel for tenderness, test your strength or notice that your pain changes when you turn your neck. They also rely entirely on how you describe your symptoms, and it's easy to leave out the detail that matters.

Why “rotator cuff injury” may not be the full story

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that steady the shoulder. Pain around this area is common, but several different problems can look similar, including:

•rotator cuff-related shoulder pain or tendon irritation

•a tear in the tendon, which may follow a fall or lifting injury

•frozen shoulder, which needs a different approach to exercise

•irritation of the AC joint at the top of the shoulder

•pain referred from the neck

The right exercises for one of these can aggravate another. A program that suits a sore tendon, for example, may not suit a stiff, frozen shoulder.

What does a physio shoulder assessment involve?

At Belconnen Physiotherapy Clinic, we start by listening to your story, then examine your shoulder, neck and upper back. We check your range of movement, strength and the way you use your arm in daily life and sport. From there, we explain what we think is contributing to your pain and build a plan around you. That may include targeted exercises, hands-on treatment, advice on work and activity, and regular reviews so your program can be adjusted as you progress.

Will I need a scan?

Not always. Imaging can be useful in some situations, but many people have changes on a scan without any pain, so results need to be interpreted alongside a proper assessment. We'll let you know if we think imaging or a GP review is appropriate.

When should I book an appointment?

•Pain that hasn't eased after a couple of weeks

•Pain at night or when lying on the shoulder

•Difficulty lifting your arm, or a sudden loss of strength after a fall or heavy lift

•Pins and needles or numbness into the arm or hand

•Symptoms that keep returning

Seek urgent medical attention if shoulder or arm pain comes with chest pain, shortness of breath or sweating, or if the joint is hot, red and swollen and you feel feverish.

Using AI alongside your physio

There's no need to stop researching. Bring what you've learned to your appointment, along with any exercises you've already tried. It helps us understand what you've been doing and what has or hasn't made a difference.
