Do I Need a GP Referral to See a Physio in Canberra?

October 13, 2026•3 min read

Many people in Canberra put off booking physiotherapy because they assume they need to see a GP first and collect a referral. It's one of the most common misunderstandings we hear at Belconnen Physiotherapy Clinic, and it can mean weeks of avoidable discomfort. The short answer is that, in most cases, you can book straight in.

Do I need a GP referral to see a physio?

In Australia, physiotherapists are primary contact practitioners. This means you can make an appointment without a referral, and we can assess your problem, explain what we find and start a plan at your first visit. This applies to everyday concerns such as back pain, knee and shoulder problems, sports injuries and rehabilitation after surgery.

When might a GP or paperwork be involved?

You don't need a referral to be seen, but some funding pathways do involve your GP or another party:

•Medicare chronic disease management plans: if your GP prepares a plan for an eligible long-term condition, you may be able to access a limited number of Medicare-rebated allied health visits each year.

•Workers compensation and CTP claims: these usually need a claim number or medical certificate before treatment begins.

•Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA): treatment arrangements may require a referral from your GP.

•Private health insurance: most extras policies don't require a referral for physiotherapy, but rebates vary, so check with your fund.

If you're unsure which applies to you, call our Belconnen team before your visit and we'll point you in the right direction.

Will a physio just send me back to my GP?

Only when it genuinely helps you. Most muscle, joint and movement problems can be assessed and managed directly by a physiotherapist. If we find something outside our scope, such as signs that suggest you need blood tests, imaging or a medication review, we'll explain why and refer you to your GP or another appropriate health professional. We're happy to share our findings so you don't have to start from scratch.

What happens at a first physio appointment?

•A conversation about your symptoms, history, work, sport and goals

•A hands-on assessment of your movement, strength, posture and the affected area

•A plain-English explanation of what we think is going on

•A plan that may include exercises, hands-on treatment and self-management advice

•Guidance on whether other health professionals should be involved

Common questions about seeing a physio

Can I claim physio on private health insurance without a referral?

Often, yes. Extras cover commonly includes physiotherapy without a referral, but the amount you receive depends on your fund, your level of cover and your annual limits. Your health fund can confirm the details.

Should I see a physio or a GP first?

For many muscle and joint problems, a physio is a sensible first stop. Seek urgent medical attention, however, if you have chest pain, a sudden severe headache, unexplained fever, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain following a significant accident. In an emergency, call 000.
