That dragging, weighed-down feeling in your legs can make a simple walk, a training session or even a day at your desk feel harder than it should. Heavy legs are a common concern among the people we see across Belconnen and Canberra. The good news is that a physio can often help work out what's behind it.
Heavy legs aren't a diagnosis on their own. They're a symptom, and several things can contribute:
•Muscle fatigue after hard training, a new exercise program or a big weekend on your feet
•Deconditioning, when your legs aren't used to the amount of activity you're asking of them
•Irritation of the lower back or nerves that supply the legs
•Long periods of sitting or standing, which can leave legs feeling sluggish
•Circulation problems or other medical conditions that need a GP's review
•Some medications or nutritional factors, which your GP can help investigate
Because the causes vary so much, it's worth having your symptoms looked at properly rather than guessing.
Often, yes, when the cause is related to how your muscles, joints and nerves are working or how you're loading your body. A physiotherapist can assess your lower back, hips, knees, feet and nerves, check your strength and movement, and look at your recent activity. From there, we can suggest an approach that suits you, which might include:
•A graded strength and conditioning program
•Advice on managing training load and recovery
•Hands-on treatment where appropriate
•Guidance on breaking up long periods of sitting or standing
•Footwear and movement advice
If we think the cause sits outside our area, we'll explain why and refer you to your GP.
We'll ask when the heaviness started, what makes it better or worse, and whether you have symptoms such as pins and needles, back pain or swelling. We'll then examine your movement and strength, screen your lower back and nerves, and explain what we've found in plain English. You'll leave with a clear plan and an understanding of what to expect.
Gentle, regular activity such as walking often helps legs feel less sluggish, but pushing hard through unexplained heaviness isn't always wise. If your legs feel consistently heavy despite rest, or the feeling is getting worse, an assessment is a sensible next step.
Some symptoms need medical attention rather than a physio appointment. Seek urgent care if you have:
•swelling, redness, warmth or pain in one leg
•sudden shortness of breath or chest pain
•numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or changes in bladder or bowel control
•leg weakness that is coming on quickly
In an emergency, call 000.
•Walk regularly and take short movement breaks if you sit for long periods
•Try simple calf raises and sit-to-stand exercises if they feel comfortable
•Keep a note of when the heaviness is worst, such as after work, after training or at night
•Check that your footwear is supportive and in good condition
These are general suggestions only. If your symptoms are persistent or worrying, it's best to have them checked.
If heavy legs are getting in the way of work, sport or daily life, our friendly team at Belconnen Physiotherapy Clinic can help you understand what's going on. Individual results vary, and we'll always be upfront about what's realistic.
